Ancient wisdom for modern explorers

The Dharma retreat brings together three of the most powerful tools and practices we know: psychedelics, therapy, and Buddhist wisdom.

Each is powerful on its own — but together? Magic.

That’s exactly what this retreat is all about:

  • Buddhist wisdom and meditation practices that are just as applicable today as they were 2,500 years ago
  • Psychedelics that can help you experience some of those big ideas firsthand
  • Support from transpersonal therapists who can make sure you’re not bypassing the human stuff, so you can apply what you discover to your life

It’s a chance to explore the very nature of reality (and get some clarity along the way) — with the help of skilled guides who are experienced in all three areas.

Who is this retreat for?

The Dharma retreat was created for anyone who wants to explore the synergy of psychedelics and Buddhism — whether you’re a long-time meditator or a newcomer to this world.

Maybe psychedelics cracked open a door for you — showing you something about consciousness, reality, or yourself that you can’t unknow. Now you’re curious about Dharma as a way to keep exploring that territory.

Or maybe you’re coming from the other direction: you’ve found something meaningful through meditation, and you’re wondering what might open up through psychedelics.

Either way, you’re probably:

  • Ready to turn down the noise and get some clarity
  • Curious about psychedelics as a way to explore consciousness
  • Drawn to Buddhist teachings, and have a sense that there might be something for you there
  • Looking for a spiritual path that feels true to you

You don’t need to be some kind of meditation master or Buddhist scholar to join us. You just need to be curious about what happens when these worlds come together.

“One of the best experiences of my life. I have been doing talk therapy for years, along with breathwork, yoga, and all kinds of retreats involving inner work. None of these were able to provide such a transformational experience as Alalaho.” – Gui, Brazil

Why we created this retreat?

A field guide to consciousness

Here’s the thing about Dharma: it’s not a spiritual philosophy that tells you what to believe. It’s more like a field guide to consciousness — a set of ideas and practices that you need to explore for yourself, to find out what’s true for you.

We’ve created the Dharma retreat to give you a way to experience some of those big ideas firsthand — not just as an intellectual concept, but as a lived, felt experience.

We’ll be exploring how Dharma can help us prepare for, make sense of, and integrate psychedelic experiences. And also how psychedelics can help us go deeper with a Dharma practice. And by adding one-on-one support from therapists, we’ll keep it all grounded in your actual life — so you can see how these transpersonal experiences relate to your very personal reality.

This isn’t about pushing yourself to be the perfect meditator (and yes, you can absolutely move if your leg goes numb). It’s about creating space to explore, with plenty of support along the way.

The schedule

Your experience isn’t just about what happens when you’re at the retreat.

Your journey starts before you arrive, unfolds over six days of exploration, and continues long after you head home.

What to expect

Days at the retreat will flow between meditation, learning, ceremony, and integration — with plenty of time to process it all (or just hang out in the hammock, your call).

Expect a good mix of solo and social time.

Mornings might find you meditating with the sunrise, or journaling with your morning coffee.

Afternoons bring Buddhist talks, meditation workshops, one-on-one sessions with our therapists, and time to simply be.

Evenings often end around the fire, sharing stories under the stars — because sometimes the biggest insights come when we’re just being human together.

Meet your guides

The Alalaho team have been offering safe, legal psychedelic retreats since 2016. Originally established as part of the UK Psychedelic Society, we’ve hosted over 100 retreats and counting.

Our retreats are led by experienced therapists and psychedelic guides who know the terrain — so you can feel safe, supported and well held on every step of this adventure.

Leading the Dharma retreat team is Alalaho’s Founder, Jennifer Tessler, who brings years of experience across all three areas — from her 15+ year relationship with Tibetan Buddhism* (including multiple 50-day solitary silent retreats), through her own psychedelic exploration and experience guiding hundreds of psychedelic journeys, to her work as a transpersonal psychotherapist.

You’ll be in good hands with guides who get it. All of it.

*If you’re a true Buddhism nerd who wants to know more about Jen’s lineage, here’s the lowdown: She’s been practicing Vajrayana Buddhism & Dzogchen, studying under the close guidance of her Tibetan root teacher for over 15 years.

FAQs

Have questions? Let’s dive in.

How is the Dharma retreat different from the Core retreat?

While our Core retreat is focused on helping people open up to the magic of the universe — taking those first steps into the unknown in a safe, supported setting — the Dharma retreat is for those who are feeling called to explore psychedelics and consciousness through a more spiritual (and specifically Buddhist) lens.

The Core retreat does include some meditation practices, but our aim is to create a space where everyone can explore — regardless of their spiritual path or interest. The Dharma retreat, on the other hand, will definitely have a strong focus on Buddhist teachings and meditation. We’ll cover all the same psychedelic essentials as in the Core retreat, including lots of focus on preparation and integration, along with your journey at the retreat.

I’m interested in meditation but don’t know much about Buddhism. Is this retreat right for me?

Definitely. This retreat is about exploration, not expertise, and is open to both new and experienced meditators. We’ll guide you through everything, answer all your questions (even the ones you think are silly), and help you find practices that work for you. That said, it’s probably not for you if you’ve never tried to sit and meditate — in that case we’d recommend starting with our Core retreat to get a taste before you go deeper.

Will we spend the whole time meditating?

Not at all. While meditation is part of each day, we’ve created a balanced schedule that includes workshops, the psychedelic ceremony, Dharma talks, connection, and plenty of free time. This is about giving you the space and time you need to explore and find answers — not spending every second in silence.

What does Dharma mean?

Dharma is the word we use for Buddhist wisdom and insight — both the ideas and concepts behind it, and the path of personal exploration and insight through which each individual experiences these ideas for themselves.

Something that’s important to know (especially if you’re new to Buddhism) is that Buddhism isn’t a spiritual philosophy that tells you what to believe. Instead, it shares practices and insights, with the expectation that you will explore them yourself, and can decide for yourself how they apply to your life.

In the context of this retreat, Dharma refers to our focus on Buddhist wisdom, using it as the base for our psychedelic exploration. We’ll be sharing Buddhist teachings, exploring meditation and insight practices, and seeing how they can support and deepen the psychedelic experience — and vice versa.

I'm not sure whether or not psychedelics are compatible with my Buddhist practice. How can I decide if this is the right fit for me?

This is an incredibly personal decision, and ultimately, you’re the only person who can decide what feels right to you and your own path.

What we can do is give you our take on this, and see how it lands.

There is no one “right” way to approach psychedelics, from a Buddhist perspective. While some teachers and Sanghas might frown on any substances that are seen to alter the mind, this is by no means the only approach. In particular, some more esoteric and mystical lineages have clearly used substances as part of their practice.

For us, what’s important is the intention going into this kind of exploration. It requires a certain level of awareness, clarity, and strength of mind to engage with psychedelics in a way that is truly beneficial (and not just intoxicating).

Because almost anything can be an intoxicant. Your phone can be an intoxicant. Everyday life can be an intoxicant.

It’s all about how we approach it, and what we do with it.

The intention with this retreat is to use psychedelics in a way that supports our Buddhist practice, and that helps us develop our wisdom and compassion. For us, this has been an incredibly powerful synergy, and one that has been worth exploring.

The question of whether this is the right path for you is something only you can answer. You have to find what feels right to you. If you want to discuss it, you can always get in touch.

How experienced are Alalaho's facilitators with Buddhist teachings and meditation?

We created this retreat because Buddhist wisdom is core to the history and ethos of Alalaho — it even inspired our name. The word Alalaho comes from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition; it expresses the innate joy and wisdom that arises when we embrace and accept all aspects of reality, just as it is.

Alalaho’s founder and director, Jennifer Tessler, brings 15+ years of Buddhist practice, including extensive retreat experience and deep study with Buddhist masters. But more importantly, she understands how to make these ancient teachings practical and relevant for modern life — because she’s walking this path herself.

Jennifer will be leading this retreat, along with a team of professional guides who each bring their own unique history and approach to spirituality. Rest assured that we’ll be able to support you in your own exploration — whether you’re already experienced with Buddhism and meditation, or just starting out.

Where psychedelic exploration meets Buddhist wisdom — so you can go deeper with both.

You’ve had glimpses of something profound (through meditation, psychedelics, or both) — now it’s time to see what happens when you really have the time and space to explore.

It’s six days to turn down the noise in your head. Reconnect with what really matters. And find a path that feels true for you.
